  • Our Story

In January 2019, we had an idea. We didn’t know where it would lead, but we knew it was worth pursuing.

As founders, we had spent years building a successful education company—running coding, robotics, and Design Thinking workshops across schools, corporations, and public institutions. Our philosophy was what we called Design Innovation: a blend of Design Thinking and Computational Thinking. It brought together open-ended problem solving with the hard skills of STEM to empower learners not just to build, but to understand what to build in order to create a better future.

We became entrepreneurs in education with one goal:

Deliver future-ready pedagogy built for the 21st Century - accessible to all, highly effective and delightfully engaging

Because education today is no longer about getting the right answers. It is about empowering learners with the 4 Cs:

    • Creativity
    • Collaboration
    • Critical Thinking
    • Communication

And we believe in a fifth C—Computational Thinking.

Before Rolljak, we built and scaled Potato Pirates, a globally recognised award-winning card game series that teaches computer science without computers. With Rolljak, our mission expanded:

    Unlock the 4Cs at scale

    The Problem We Saw Everywhere:

Through our work in Design Thinking, we noticed something worrying.

Teachers were being trained in Design Thinking—but the methodology never truly entered the mainstream curriculum. Despite running workshops for multinational corporations, defence contractors, shipyards, public educators, and thousands of students… the system remained unchanged.

We served as innovation judges, guest speakers, trainers, and facilitators across countless contexts. And one thing became clear: Our values and our actions as a society were out of alignment.

In a world defined by AI and automation, soft skills—creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication—are the most in-demand competencies. Yet these very skills are not core to existing curricula.

Why? Because integrating them requires rewriting syllabi, retraining staff, and restructuring entire school systems. It’s impractical. It’s slow. And it’s not scalable.

Worse still, most methodologies that nurture these skills - Design Thinking, ideation, creativity workshops - are offline, facilitator-heavy and nearly impossible to run at scale.

    The Classroom Challenge:

Even when teachers want to adopt more open-ended pedagogies, they face persistent constraints:

    • Social loafing: some students opt out because others are participating.
    • Unequal participation: a few students dominate while the rest disappear.
    • Facilitator ratio: typically one facilitator per ten students to run open-ended tasks.
    • No visibility: when activities have no “right answers,” assessing engagement becomes difficult.
    • Time: the most critical barrier. Teachers work an average of 54 hours per week. Less than half of that is spent teaching. The rest is marking and preparing lessons.

    We asked ourselves:
How might we use AI to reduce teacher workload and make 21st-century learning effortless?

    Where Rolljak Comes In:

We built Rolljak as the platform that makes 21st-century learning finally practical, scalable, and enjoyable.

    Rolljak helps educators:

    • Use AI for marking: Automate grading, including open-ended answers and written responses.
    • Use AI to create content: Generate quizzes, prompts, lesson plans, activities, and creative tasks instantly.
    • Track student engagement in real time: Rolljak’s proprietary engagement layer reveals who’s participating and how.
    • Enable collaboration effortlessly: Breakout groups, team activities, brainstorming sessions—designed for equal participation.
    • Activate peer-to-peer learning: Voting, ranking, evaluating, and improving each other’s ideas.
    • Leverage meaningful gamification: Not just leaderboards. Real behavioural mechanics that enhance motivation.

    And most importantly:

    Rolljak makes learning fun

Building our first brand, Potato Pirates taught us that fun should be done thoughtfully, intentionally, and never as an afterthought. We capitalised on our skillsets and experience in creating a successful edutainment brand and poured those same learnings into creating Rolljak.
