About the School
The School of Science and Technology (SST) in Singapore is a specialized secondary school focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. It was founded in 2010 and is part of the Ministry of Education's effort to promote STEM education in Singapore. SST aims to provide its students with a unique and rigorous educational experience that prepares them for careers in STEM fields.
As the education landscape evolves, teachers embrace technology to enhance their teaching methods and provide a more engaging and interactive learning experience for their students.
Ms Yeo, a Higher Chinese Language teacher at the School of Science and Technology, Singapore, is one such teacher who is using technology to make language learning more fun and effective for her students.
Ms Yeo teaches two classes of students around 13 years old and studying Higher Chinese Language. To make her language lessons more interactive and engaging, she turned to Rolljak, a gamified learning platform that allows teachers to create quizzes and assessments using multimedia elements.
As a language teacher, Ms Yeo has played a significant role in shaping SST's language curriculum. She believes that language learning should be an interactive and engaging experience.
When asked where she first heard about Rolljak, she said she heard it “Through the introduction from Edtech Committee in our school. However, my first brief encounter was in an activity conducted by SUTD.”
Impressed with its features, she began incorporating Rolljak into her language curriculum.
Transitioning From Other Educational Platforms to Rolljak
As an experienced educator, Ms Yeo has tried various educational platforms before Rolljak. She mentioned that she had used Kahoot! and Quizizz in the past, which are MCQ-based learning platforms similar to Rolljak. However, she noticed that Rolljak's unique features set it apart.
Rolljak offers various templates for creating quizzes, including multiple choice questions and an "Unscramble" function that Ms Yeo finds particularly useful for language learning.
While she had previously used similar tools like Kahoot and Quizizz, Rolljak's unique templates and multimedia capabilities set it apart from other tools. Although some templates may not be directly relevant to language teaching, Ms Yeo found that her students enjoyed the "slicing sushi" activity.
How is Rolljak Making Language Learning More Engaging and Interactive
Keeping your students engaged and motivated is crucial for their success in learning a new language. However, with so many distractions in today's world, creating a classroom environment that fosters active participation and enthusiasm can be challenging.
Luckily, there are many strategies you can use to make language learning more engaging and interactive and thus more effective. From using technology and multimedia resources to incorporating games and role-plays, there are numerous ways to keep your students interested and motivated in learning a new language.
So, how is Ms Yeo using Rolljak to make language learning more engaging and interactive?
“Rolljak's "Unscramble" feature is particularly useful for language learning. I found it effective in helping my students learn Chinese characters and vocabulary”
Despite some initial difficulties creating activities using the "Unscramble" feature, Ms Yeo finds that Rolljak's user-friendly interface and customizable templates have helped her create engaging and interactive learning experiences for her students.
“Rolljak has positively impacted my students' learning outcomes,” Ms Yeo added. The platform allows her to track her students' progress and provide immediate feedback, which helps her tailor her teaching to their needs. In addition, Rolljak has made language learning more fun and engaging for her students, resulting in better retention of language concepts.
Specifically, she says, “I think the students can be engaged, and I can use it to complement my teaching.”
What Can Ms Yeo Say About Rolljak?
“I think the students can be engaged, and I can use it to complement my teaching.”
She mentioned that the MCQ templates are good and the "Unscramble" feature used for language learning is quite effective.
However, she did note that there is room for improvement in terms of ease of use and the availability of more templates that cater to language teaching. Despite these limitations, Ms Yeo is still positive about Rolljak and plans to continue using it in her classes.
“I think Rollak is more suitable for design or ADMT students.”
However, she still sees the potential of using Rolljak in language teaching and hopes that more templates, such as fill-in-the-blanks or drag-and-drop, can be added to cater to language learning.
